On Up To Boston: Boston Events Celebrating Black History Month

BOSTON – February is Black History Month all across the United States, and many people have their own ways of celebrating. Maybe that means teaching your kids about black Americans who have changed our country or shopping at local black-owned businesses. Whatever your custom is, the city of Boston has a few events that are celebrating Black History Month, and we’ve taken a look at the most interesting ones for you.

The first is Our Story!, a compilation of poetry, dance, music and scenes from historical and current events significant to African and African-American history. It takes place at the Strand Theater in Dorchester and costs $20 in advance or $25 at the door. According to the website, “these performances will feature amazing acting, dancing and singing by talented students from local colleges, high schools, and middle schools and OrigiNation’s professional youth dance companies. It will also feature some of Boston’s most talented adult professionals.” It takes place on February 14 and 15 and tickets can be bought here.

On Saturday, February 8 there is the 3rd Annual Carter G. Woodson Basketball Tournament which is held at BCYF Shelburne Community Center. This tournament, honoring the founder of Black History Month, is free, but registration is required. You can sign up here!

Calling all youth artists! On January 30 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. you can audition a piece for the Dream Chasers event, hosted by the city of Boston. According to the website, “this event will highlight community leaders of color and detail their steps to success and all youth performers city-wide to perform a social justice piece.” If you’d like to audition please sing up here as soon as you can!

Lastly, there is the 3rd Annual Fashionscape & Arts of Boston networking event. This takes place on February 26 at Hibernian hall from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., “the premise of this event is to celebrate Black creatives in Boston and highlight their successes. There will be fashion presentations, music, art presentations, food and more!” It is also free, and you can sign up here.

Hopefully, there is something here that you can attend to celebrate Black History Month. If not, celebrate it in whichever manner you find most fulfilling!
