After hearing and considering the concerns of community members regarding the use of the word “picnic,” Madison Park Development Corporation and the Dewitt Center have changed the name of this event to the “Pick-Up Basket Ball.” We know that language is a complex, ever-evolving system, and depending on history and life experience, people can hold different relationships to the same words or phrases. We want to ensure that the name does not in any way dishonor the purpose of the event, which is to celebrate the Dewitt Center’s mission and incredible impact in the community over the last five years. We are excited to relaunch the event as the “Pick-Up Basket Ball,” which we believe embodies the spirit of spontaneity, joy, and community that is ever-present at the Dewitt Center. We are grateful to our community for their thoughtful feedback, and we look forward to celebrating with you on Wednesday, May 17^th.
